Farmer Outreach Program
Since 2003, Cedar Circle Farm has worked with youth organizers in Worcester, Massachusetts, to assist at-risk inner city youth develop gardening skills and awareness about food and agricultural issues. The program is called the Urban Farmer Agricultural Academy (UFAA). Young people from Worcester regularly visit Cedar Circle Farm. In addition, the 4-H of Worcester County has donated an acre of land for the program participants to use as their own market garden. UFAA’s goals are:
- Introduce inner-city youth between the ages of 10-21 to farm production
- Develop business and marketing skills needed to set up farmers markets, CSA’s, and tap into local food markets to develop new nutritional trends
- Encourage the participants to consider farming as a career or summer job
- Increase participants’ knowledge and raise awareness among inner-city communities about the importance of local, organic agriculture
- Expose inner-city teens to rural lifestyles and cultures
- Increase access of quality organic produce in low-income communities
- Broaden understanding of entire food production process (from seed to table including cooking and food preparation)
